about (formal)

My name is Hannah. Or McLicious.

This blog was first called “un-ephemera,” which was silly. For a short while, it was changed to “mediaphilia,” and then I decided to add “comp lit” to the mix. I think it describes most of the things I blog about (literature, writing, culture, politics, media, travel) as well as what I like to study. Basically, I read too much, and I like to find ways to apply what I’m reading to everything else, like the aforementioned writing, culture, politics, media, and travel, plus sociology, religion, and anything else I manage to think up.

I graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona in December, 2010. My BA is in creative writing (fiction) with minors in music and Spanish. In addition to Spanish, I can speak a fair amount of Portuguese and French. I started work on two graduate degrees, an MA in children’s literature and an MS in library and information science, in September, 2011, at Simmons College in Boston.

More and more I realize how much social identity factors into experience, education, creative processes, and lifestyle. It’s unavoidable, and so certainly my blog posts will reflect my personal identity, which, depending on the day and the theme of the post, is one or a combination of these things:

  • United States citizen
  • Female
  • Biracial (black and white)
  • Adoptee (domestic, as an infant)
  • Heterosexual
  • Reform Jewish
  • Democrat/Liberal progressive
  • Middle class
  • College graduate
  • Raised in a Chicano-Jewish home
  • Arizonan
  • Pacifist
  • Graduate student

That’s certainly not in any particular order.

As the subtitle says, this blog is a work in progress, a study in how I present myself to the world. I am a work in progress, and I’m not perfect. But I make every effort to appear to be as intelligent as I actually am, and for my blog posts to be interesting, valuable, well-written, and worthy of being read. The frequency at which I update this page alone says a lot about how much of a work in progress this is. Often you don’t know what you’re doing until you do it, and choosing what I blog about is a lot about learning what I’m interested in and in what fields I have something to contribute. I won’t lie and say that there aren’t the occasional angst-ridden posts about friends, or blatant comment-fishing posts, but that’s part of blogging, and it’s part of life. I’m only human. Also, this blog isn’t meant to reflect the same type of writing I do for papers or published work in other media. It’s a personal approach to academic and sociocultural subjects. By reading this blog, you’ll be following my (probably lifelong) journey to figuring myself and the world out.
