I survived my first blizzard. Apparently blizzards are not the scary thing I learned about in The Long Winter ; rather, they’re nice, long days of continuous snowfall that is quiet and pretty. I went out yesterday and played (by which I mean walked around with everyone else, as we were able to walk down generally busy streets, not using the sidewalks and roaming and trudging), and it was great. So this morning I decided to make something cozy for breakfast, so I looked up a bunch of recipes and combined them with no real logic to make one person’s serving of arroz con leche.
In all honesty, it probably should have been two servings. I didn’t exactly feel amazing afterwards. But it’s hard to make small amounts of food and not burn it. So I invented this version of arroz con leche, dairy-free, with a little bit of added protein so that it would feel like a “balanced” meal. Considering I mostly made it up, I think it was rather successful. Continue reading →

So in late September I checked out Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life: Unleash the Healing Power of Fresh Juices and Cleansing Diets from the library, and yesterday I finally “finished” it. That means I finished four chapters and then decided I was done. It’s not a terrible book, but it’s also not a great book. I can’t decide how I feel about it.
So first of all, anyone who tells you in a book that you should think hard before getting vaccines because of autism is someone whose advice you should NOT be taking, because people who cannot do research or understand medical research have no business giving you medical advice. But because I’m not stupid, and because I have read the work of people who I do give credence to who also talk about the benefit of raw foods and all that jazz, I figured I would keep reading. Given that I have so many wonky health issues that are hard to figure out, I’m always out for new knowledge, and I’m almost always willing to try new methods when they’re obviously not going to kill me. Drinking juice and eating raw foods will not kill you (except for the three times I’ve gotten food poisoning from leafy greens, but we won’t get into that here). Continue reading →

So I was required to join Pinterest for a class project, and I hated it pretty instantly. I didn’t realize that when you chose what you were interested in, it made you follow those people instead of just recommending them or using them as an algorithm to provide recs later. And they make it really, really hard to unfollow people. So that sucks, because my apartment might be cluttered beyond belief, but I like my Internet nice and clean and streamlined. I also didn’t think I would find it useful because I generally save things that are words, not images. Pinterest seems to be the domain of mommy bloggers, brides to be, Pinnercisers (i.e. people who pin exercise tips and probably do not exercise), and foodies, and while I like some of those things, I am more of a reader, so if I bookmark something, it’s probably a long essay that analyzes a book or something.
But I recently started reading my favorite food blogs again, and then when I was working on my Pinterest assignment yesterday, I went to read some of them and they killed my computer. Food photos might be pretty, but if your blog design is endless scroll, you are ruining my life. So, food blogs, I am breaking up with you. And if you don’t have a Pinterest account, we’ll never run into each other again. Because it’s so much easier to just look at a title and small photo and decide right then if it’s worth clicking on. I feel incredibly accomplished today, and yet I’m not tired, I haven’t left my apartment except to cross the street in the rain and realize there was no way I was going to try and catch the train in that weather, and I haven’t worked out in a million years.
Funny how that works. For one thing, it is so hot in my apartment that if I leave the five square feet where my fan happens to be blowing, I immediately start sweating, so I think I’m probably burning calories and losing weight just by occasionally going to the bathroom or daring to sit at my kitchen table when I eat. Also, it’s too hot to eat, for the most part, so I mostly subsist on water and popsicles. And atomic fireballs. Lately, I’m really, really into atomic fireballs. I forgot how amazing they are. Thank you, Switching Well , for reminding me. Continue reading →

I kind of abandoned my food blog because I have too much stuff going on, but that doesn’t mean I abandoned my interest in food, health, or food books. I think that’s a love that will last a lifetime. But it’s always good to be reminded of why and how you stay healthy and happy through food. I think it’s especially important since I’ve otherwise been making so many other awesome, positive changes in my life. That’s why I recently read Susan Albers’ Eating Mindfully and The Naked Foods Cookbook by Margaret Floyd.
There’s something about buying a Kindle that makes you more willing to read self-help books. Eating Mindfully can definitely be categorized as such, but it also makes some really good points about eating smaller meals, enjoying the smell of your food before you eat it, and taking time to enjoy the entire process of food, from buying the groceries to chopping them up. Albers brings up psychological and physiological reasons to eat more slowly and mindfully, and makes points that should appeal to a variety of readers, from those who are interested in New Age sap and those who just want to lose weight. She quotes Buddha, cites quotes and results from her own patients, and gives little exercises to do. You can write yourself a mindful eating contract, learn how to meditate, or take time to use your five senses. Continue reading →
